The woman was nervous about the weekend. The boss was very wealthy, with a fine home on the waterway, and cars costing more than her house. The first day and evening went well, and my friend was delighted to have this rare glimpse into how the very wealthy live. The husband's employer was quite generous as a host and took them to the finest restaurants. Knowing she would never have the opportunity to indulge in this kind of extravagance again, she was enjoying herself immensely. As the three of them were about to enter an exclusive restaurant that evening, the boss was walking slightly ahead of his guests. He stopped suddenly, looking down on the pavement for a long, silent moment. There was nothing on the ground except a single darkened penny that someone had dropped, and a few cigarette butts. Still silent, the man reached down and picked up the penny. He held it up and smiled, then put it in his pocket as if he had found a great treasure. "How absurd!" she thought. What need did this man have for a single penny? Why would he even take the time to stop and pick it up? Throughout dinner, the entire scene nagged at her. Finally, she could stand it no longer. She causally mentioned that her daughter once had a coin collection, and asked if the penny he had found had been of some value. A smile crept across the man's face as he reached into his pocket for the penny and held it out for her to see. She had seen many pennies before! What was the point of this? "Look at it," He said. "Read what it says." She read the words "United States of America." "No, not that; read further." "One cent?" "No, keep reading." "In God we Trust?" "Yes!" "And?" "And if I trust in God, the name of God is holy, even on a coin. Whenever I find a coin I see that inscription. It is written on every single United States coin, but we never seem to notice it! God drops a message right in front of me telling me to trust Him? Who am I to pass it by? When I see a coin, I pray, I stop to see if my trust IS in God at that moment. I pick the coin up as a response to God; that I do trust in Him. For a short time, at least, I cherish it as if it were gold. I think it is God's way of starting a conversation with me. Lucky for me, God is patient and pennies are plentiful!" When I was out shopping today, I found a penny on the sidewalk. I stopped and picked it up, and realized that I had been worrying and fretting in my mind about things I cannot change. I read the words, "In God We Trust," and had to laugh. Yes, God, I get the message. today'sTHOT============================ Bibles coming apart are owned by people who are not. =======================================

My business is not to remake myself, but to make the absolute best of what God made. --Robert Browning If I feed my faith, my fears will starve to death. Normal day--let me be aware of the treasure you are! An admission of error is a sign of strength rather than a weakness. The best form of spiritual exercise is to touch the floor regularly with your knees. He who seeks a friend without a fault remains without one. Row after row of shoulder-high hedges, leading to one dead end after another. Successfully navigate the labyrinth, and discover the door to a tall tower in the center of the garden. Were you to look at our family pictures of the trip, you'd see four of our five family members standing on the top of the tower. Hmmmm, someone is still on the ground. Guess who? I was stuck in the foliage. I just couldn't figure out which way to go. Ah, but then I head a voice from above. "Hey, Dad." I looked up to see Sara, peering through the turret at the top. "You're going the wrong way," she explained. "Back up and turn right." Do you think I trusted her? I didn't have to. I could have trusted my own instincts, consulted other confused tourists, sat and pouted and wondered why God would let this happen to me. But do you know what I did? I listened. Her vantage point was better than mine. She was above the maze. She could see what I couldn't. If you look at a ring under the microscope every day and become intimately familiar with every flaw, you might be embarrassed by it. But that is not how God meant the beauty of diamonds to be seen. The beauty of a diamond is seen when someone holds it up in the sunlight and everyone can see it sparkle. We are created to shine with the light of God's creative genius. When you appreciate yourself in all your uniqueness, you will dare to hold your life up to the light. You will dare to live out the beauty you were created to express ... cleaned and polished with the forgiveness of God. --Connie Neal from God's Words of Life from the NIV Women's Devotional Bible * * * * * * * * * * * (Thursday, June 9) As boldly as the center beam of the cross proclaims God's holiness, the crossbeam declares his love. And, oh, how wide his love reaches.
It doesn't. Nor does it state, "for God so loved the Europeans or Africans . . ." "the sober or successful . . ." "the young or the old . . ." No, when we read John 3:16 , we simply (and happily) read, "for God so loved the world." How wide is God's love? Wide enough for the whole world. Are you included in the world? Then you are included in God's love. from He Chose the Nails by Max Lucado...reprinted in Mocha with Max * * * * * * * * * * * (Tuesday, June 7) "Courage

The airline agents were doing their best to rebook passengers quickly, but a demanding passenger pushed to the front of the line, pounded on the counter, and shouted repeatedly, "You have to get me on this plane!" The agent remained accommodating and unrattled, but the passenger became even more incensed and insulting. "Do you know who you're talking to?" he shouted. "Do you know who I am?" The agent calmly took the microphone and announced over the intercom, "Ladies and gentlemen, we have a passenger here who doesn't know who he is. Will someone who knows this passenger please come identify him?" With that, the other passengers broke into applause. from Humor Me by Barbara Johnson * * * * * * * * * * * (Sunday, May 1) A woman was dying. A pastor was summoned, and he attempted to comfort her, but to no avail. "I am lost," she said. "I have ruined my life and every life around me. Now I'm going painfully to hell. There is no hope for me." The pastor saw a framed picture of a pretty girl on the dresser. "Who is this?" he asked. The pale woman brightened. "She's my daughter, the one beautiful thing in my life." "And would you help her if she were in trouble or made a mistake? Would you forgive her? Would you still love her?" "Of course I would!" cried the woman. "I would do anything for her! Why do you ask such a question?" "Because I want you to know," said the pastor, "That God has a picture of you on His dresser." from Humor Me by Barbara Johnson
